The Benefits of Membership
By liaising with the food industry, producer organisations, government agencies, and consumer groups, food writers are better placed to communicate accurately and effectively.
All members receive:
- A full list of members and their skills.
- Pen & Palate every two months, and the opportunity to contribute to it.
- Invitations to Guild and corporate activities and social get-togethers.
- Professional members have voting rights at AGM.
- Only members can enter the The Culinary Quills awards.
- Corporate members have direct access to food writers throughout New Zealand, and the opportunity to introduce new products and ideas to them.
Membership Criteria and Subs
The definitions of the categories of membership are outlined below. If you have any queries about these criteria, please contact us using the contact form.
Open to those engaged as writers, journalists, or any allied occupation who spend the whole or a substantial part of their working time in writing, recording, or editing material on food or nutrition for publication or dissemination. Only professional members have voting rights and are eligible to enter the Culinary Quills food writing awards.
Note that Professional Membership applicants are required to submit examples of work - this can be done electronically, but it may be necessary to send us hard copies of your work.

Professional Membership Subscription $100 $30 joining fee GST = $149.50
Open to those who, in the opinion of the Executive Committee, have a sincere interest in furthering New Zealand's health, nutrition or food knowledge through all media of communication.
Associate Membership Subscription $70 $30 joining fee GST= $115.00
Open to companies and corporate bodies with an interest in furthering food writing and its associated forms. Membership provides access to food writers throughout New Zealand, the opportunity to introduce new products and ideas, and to meet members at various functions organised by the Executive or sponsors. The Guild charges Corporate members a small fee to provide labels for mailouts, or courier distribution of samples, or to forward, by email, press releases and the like.
Corporate Membership Subscription $220 plus GST = $253.00
Open to tertiary students of journalism or food-related subjects.
Student Membership (no joining fee) Subscription $65 GST = $74.75
