WHAT IS THE NEW ZEALAND GUILD OF
FOOD WRITERS?
The New Zealand Guild of Food Writers was formed in 1987 as
a networking base for food journalists and those in allied occupations
to provide opportunities to advance their knowledge of, and interest
in, the specialist area of food, beverages and associated services.
All members interface with the public in
some way – through
magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, publishing, teaching, consultancy,
PR, catering, or photography. We have a pool of knowledge we
wish to share to our mutual benefit.
The Guild is run by an executive committee
of professional members, with regional representatives.
GUILD ACTIVITIES:
Conference
The bi-annual
conference is held with guest speakers and workshops at which
issues of the moment are discussed, such as genetically modified
foods, nutrition issues and food trends. The conference is held
in a different centre every two years.
Food: Art & Fashion - Food Writers Conference 2007
September 28-29, in Wellington
Food: Art & Fashion was the theme that bound speakers, sponsors and fun together in a real Food Week in Wellington at the end of September. A dynamic 'magazine-style' conference format provoked thought and ideas to inspire writing and food reporting.

Information about the 2009 confererence will be published as it becomes available.
The Culinary Quills
A food writers awards programme is organised in
conjunction with the biennial conference, with prizes presented
at the conference
dinner. These
awards are generously sponsored by our corporate members and
encourage food writers to extend their horizons.
Food forums
Regular food forums are held on subjects such as olive oils,
milk products, supermarkets and supermarketing, and food in advertising,
to provide a platform for those interested in working in the
area.
Professional development
Workshops, seminars, and masterclasses offer members the chance
to improve their skills in subjects such as writing and sensory
evaluation.
Publications
The Guild publishes electronic and printed material
of interest to members, including a regular journal, Pen & Palate.
All members have the opportunity to contribute to this publication. The Guild accepts advertisements for Pen & Palate and will send materials to its members. Rate Card here.
